How to Choose the Perfect High-Traffic Flooring for Your UK Business: Polished Concrete vs. Resin

At Lime Flooring, we're all about helping UK businesses find the perfect flooring solution for their needs. We specialise in Commercial, High Traffic, Flooring Solutions across the South of England and all over the UK, and with years of experience, we've seen it all! But when it comes to high-traffic areas, two options often rise to the top: polished concrete and resin flooring. Both offer excellent durability, but they have some key differences to consider.

Unveiling the Key Differences: Polished Concrete vs. Resin Flooring

Durability:

  • Polished Concrete: When it comes to sheer toughness, polished concrete is hard to beat. It's incredibly strong and resistant to scratches, chips, and even chemicals. This makes it a fantastic choice for warehouses, factories, and other areas with heavy foot traffic and equipment use. Here at Lime Flooring, we've helped countless businesses install polished concrete floors that have lasted for decades with minimal maintenance.

  • Resin Flooring: Resin flooring is also known for its durability, particularly against certain chemicals. It comes in various types, each with its own strengths. However, resin flooring can be more susceptible to cracking and chipping compared to polished concrete, especially over time.

Aesthetics:

  • Polished Concrete: Polished concrete offers a unique, natural look that complements many design styles. The grinding process reveals subtle variations in colour and texture, creating a sleek and modern aesthetic. While the colour palette leans towards natural tones, the polished finish beautifully reflects light, creating a spacious feel.

  • Resin Flooring: When it comes to customisation, resin flooring takes the crown. You can choose from a wide range of colours, patterns, and finishes, allowing you to create a truly unique floor that reflects your brand identity. This makes resin flooring a popular choice for showrooms, retail spaces, and other areas where aesthetics play a significant role.

Maintenance:

  • Polished Concrete: Polished concrete floors are known for being relatively low-maintenance. They're easy to clean with a regular mop and appropriate cleaning solutions to maintain their shine. Occasionally, a re-polish might be needed to restore the lustre, but overall, polished concrete offers a hassle-free flooring solution.

  • Resin Flooring: The maintenance needs of resin flooring can vary depending on the type of resin used. Generally, they require more frequent cleaning than polished concrete, and some types might need recoating periodically.

Cost:

  • Polished Concrete: The upfront cost of polished concrete flooring installation can vary depending on the size and condition of your existing concrete slab. However, polished concrete is a highly cost-effective option in the long run. Its durability and low maintenance requirements translate to significant savings over time.

  • Resin Flooring: The upfront cost of resin flooring can also vary depending on the chosen resin type and desired finish. While generally more affordable than polished concrete upfront, keep in mind potential future costs associated with repairs or replacements for resin flooring.

Choosing the Right Option for Your Business

So, which option is right for you? Here are some factors to consider:

  • Industry: Warehouses and factories may benefit most from the exceptional durability of polished concrete, while showrooms and reception areas might prioritise the design flexibility of resin flooring.
  • Traffic Volume & Wear and Tear: Expecting heavy foot traffic or potential impact from machinery? Polished concrete offers superior resistance. Areas prone to chemical spills might favour the chemical resistance of some resin options.
  • Budget: Consider both the upfront and long-term costs of each option.
  • Desired Aesthetics: Do you prefer a natural, modern look or a more customisable option?
  • Maintenance Requirements: Think about the ongoing cleaning and maintenance needs of each option.

Our team have recently completed a very interesting project in Ipswich at their brand new Community Facility. This new build project was undertaken for Ipswich Town Council. Using Ardex PCT 4 material, we completed the process, enhancing the surface from 40 grit to 3000 grit with resin bonded diamond tooling. The result is a striking polished concrete finish with exposed aggregates, delighting the client with the outcome.
