Emphasizing the Vitality of Surface Preparation

When it comes to applying a resin coating on commercial flooring, one step takes the spotlight as the foundation for a successful and flawless result: surface preparation. Surface preparation or floor preparation encompasses the meticulous process of thoroughly cleaning, repairing, and priming the floor surface before the resin coating is applied. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of floor preparation and how it contributes to achieving a flawless resin coating for commercial flooring.

Understanding Floor Preparation:

Floor preparation holds significant importance in the seamless installation of commercial flooring. It involves a series of measures aimed at ensuring that the substrate or existing floor surface is clean, level, dry, and structurally sound prior to the application of the new flooring material. Proper floor preparation is indispensable for achieving longevity, durability, and optimal performance of commercial flooring.

Key Factors in Floor Preparation:

  • Flooring Material Considerations:

The type of flooring material you plan to install dictates the specific requirements for floor preparation. Each flooring material, such as carpet, vinyl, or tile, may necessitate a different approach to ensure a successful installation.

  • Environmental Conditions:

Floor preparation should take into account the unique conditions of the space where the flooring will be installed. Factors such as temperature, humidity levels, and anticipated foot traffic should be considered to determine the appropriate floor preparation techniques and materials.

  • Specialised Techniques and Equipment:

In certain cases, specialised equipment or techniques may be required to adequately prepare the floor surface. Methods such as shot blasting or diamond grinding might be employed to ensure optimal surface conditions for the resin coating.

  • Professional Expertise:

Collaborating with experienced professionals who understand the significance of proper floor preparation is paramount. These experts possess the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to carry out thorough floor preparation, reducing the risk of future issues and ensuring a successful flooring installation.

With the above highlighted, let’s have a deep dive into why floor preparation is so important for your commercial space.

Ensuring Adhesion:

One of the primary reasons why surface preparation is vital is to ensure proper adhesion of the resin coating. The surface needs to be clean and free from dust, dirt, grease, and any contaminants that can hinder the bond between the coating and the substrate. By meticulously preparing the surface, you create an optimal environment for the resin to adhere to, enhancing its longevity and durability.

Removing Imperfections:

Surface preparation allows you to address any imperfections on the substrate. Whether it’s cracks, chips, or unevenness, these flaws can compromise the final appearance and performance of the resin coating. Through thorough cleaning, repairing, and levelling, you can eliminate these imperfections, creating a smooth and even surface that showcases the true beauty of the resin coating.

Enhancing Durability:

Properly preparing the surface significantly contributes to the durability of the resin coating. By removing loose particles, contaminants, and weak areas, you create a stronger bond between the coating and the substrate. This results in a coating that can withstand regular wear and tear, foot traffic, chemical exposure, and other environmental factors. Investing time and effort in surface preparation ensures that your resin coating will stand the test of time.

Preventing Delamination:

Delamination refers to the separation of the resin coating from the surface beneath it. Insufficient surface preparation can lead to delamination, as contaminants or inadequate bonding can cause the coating to peel or bubble over time. By thoroughly cleaning and preparing the surface, you minimise the risk of delamination, ensuring a seamless and long-lasting resin coating.

Achieving a Smooth Finish:

Another benefit of surface preparation is the ability to achieve a smooth and flawless finish. Uneven surfaces, rough textures, or previous coatings can negatively affect the appearance of the resin coating. By properly cleaning, sanding, and levelling the surface, you create the ideal canvas for the resin to spread evenly and create a polished, professional finish.

In the world of resin coatings, surface preparation should never be underestimated. It serves as the foundation for achieving flawless, long-lasting, and visually stunning results. By dedicating time and attention to thoroughly clean, repair, and prime the surface, you ensure optimal adhesion, enhance durability, prevent delamination, and achieve a smooth finish. So, before embarking on your next resin coating project, remember the importance of surface preparation and enjoy the rewarding results it brings.

Our team have recently completed a very interesting project in Ipswich at their brand new Community Facility. This new build project was undertaken for Ipswich Town Council. Using Ardex PCT 4 material, we completed the process, enhancing the surface from 40 grit to 3000 grit with resin bonded diamond tooling. The result is a striking polished concrete finish with exposed aggregates, delighting the client with the outcome.
