Understanding Polished Concrete

Before discussing how to maximise the lifespan of your polished concrete flooring, it is important to understand what it is and how it is made. Polished concrete is created by using diamond-polishing tools to grind down the surface of the concrete until it is smooth and glossy. The process typically involves several stages of grinding with progressively finer grits until the desired finish is achieved.

Once the concrete has been polished, it is usually treated with a sealer to help protect it from damage and extend its lifespan. Polished concrete is an extremely hard and durable surface that is resistant to wear and tear, but it does require regular maintenance to keep it looking its best.

Maintaining Your Polished Concrete Flooring

Regular maintenance is essential for maximising the lifespan of your polished concrete flooring. Here are some tips on how to maintain your floors:

Clean spills immediately

Spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent them from staining or etching the surface of the concrete. Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner and a soft mop or cloth to clean up spills. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning tools, as these can damage the surface of the concrete.

Sweep and mop regularly

Sweep or vacuum your floors daily to remove dirt and debris that can scratch the surface of the concrete. Mop your floors weekly using a mild cleaner and a soft mop.

Use floor mats

Place floor mats at entrances and high-traffic areas to prevent dirt and debris from being tracked onto the floors. This will help to reduce wear and tear on the surface of the concrete.

Reseal as needed

Your polished concrete floors should be resealed every 1–2 years to maintain their shine and protect them from damage. Talk to your flooring professional about the best type of sealer for your floors and the frequency of resealing.

Schedule regular maintenance

Regular maintenance by a professional flooring company can help to identify and address any issues with your floors before they become more serious problems. They can also provide deep cleaning and polishing services to keep your floors looking their best.

Maximising the Lifespan of Your Polished Concrete Flooring

In addition to regular maintenance, there are several other ways to maximise the lifespan of your polished concrete flooring:

Choose the right mix design

The mix design of your concrete can have a significant impact on its durability and lifespan. Talk to your flooring professional about the best mix design for your specific needs.

Choose the right finish

Different finishes can have different impacts on the lifespan of your polished concrete floors. For example, a high-gloss finish may require more maintenance than a lower-gloss finish. Talk to your flooring professional about the best finish for your needs.

Avoid heavy traffic

Excessive foot traffic, particularly from heavy machinery, can cause damage to your polished concrete floors. Consider limiting heavy traffic or using protective covers to reduce wear and tear.

Control humidity levels

Excessive humidity can cause the surface of your polished concrete floors to become slippery, which can increase the risk of slips and falls. Use dehumidifiers or other moisture control measures to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.

Maintaining the longevity of your commercial polished concrete flooring is a wise investment, both in terms of cost savings and aesthetic appeal. By following the tips and tricks mentioned in this article, you can ensure that your flooring lasts for many years to come. Regular cleaning and maintenance, as well as proper use and protection, can make a significant difference in the lifespan of your polished concrete floors.
